Dry Needling
Dry needling is a form of acupuncture that has gained popularity in athletic training and rehabilitation circles, and is used for the effective treatment of musculo-skeletal pain and movement difficulties. The technique uses a "dry" solid filiform acupuncture needle, as opposed to a hollow hypodermic needle, and is inserted into the trigger or motor point of the muscle. It is also known as intramuscular manual therapy and orthopedic acupuncture.
Dry needling is, in fact, acupuncture which integrates Western anatomy, Western medicine principles of nerve and muscle function, and Traditional Asian tools, supported by research.
In California, only Licensed Acupuncturists can legally perform this type of trigger point or “motor point” treatment, because Licensed Acupuncturists have the specific training and skill necessary to promote health without endangering the patient.
Acupuncturists complete more than 3,000 hours of education and needling technique testing, in addition to passing a State-sanctioned Clean Needle safety exam to receive licensure.
